Swipe right on your slippery soul mate
Everything you’ve ever wanted to know about lube is right here ladies and gents, take a seat. Lube, or lubricant if we’re being fancy, still (wrongly) seems to be thought of as something only ageing women who have lost their natural lubrication would use. But that’s far from the truth. If you’re wondering what is lube? Or which lube is right for me? Pens and paper at the ready, we’re about to tell-all.
So tell me, what does lube do?
Not only is it pleasurable and fun to use, lube is also on double duty as it adds extra moisture. Making sensations smoother and more natural.
How do I know which type of lube is right for me?
When looking for the perfect pal for playtime, there’s no harm in doing your research before you commit. The best piece of advice ladies – look for lube which is ‘pH balanced’, otherwise, the natural bacteria in your vagina could be disrupted, leading to infections like thrush (not fun). Don’t panic, you’re in the right place for a lube low-down.
Water-based
By far the most versatile (thanks to their match with adult toys), water-based lubes are thin, slippery and easy to rinse off when the fun ends. This makes them more prone to drying out mid-action – nothing a little re-apply can’t solve.
Oil-based
Before you fill your basket with oil-based lubes, remember that they can’t be used with latex condoms as they can break down the latex. Although they are thicker than water-based and silicone-based lubes (perfect for those with good stamina if you know what we mean), using synthetic-based oil lubes like Vaseline can irritate your vagina and can damage condoms. You can use them as massage oils though.
Silicone-based
With a longer playtime than other lubes, silicone-based lubes are safe to use with condoms and, if you’re in the mood for a steamy shower session, will hold up underwater. If your adult toys are made out of silicone, it’s best to avoid silicone-based lubes and opt for water-based instead – as they won’t damage the material.
When should I use lube?
For us gals, the vagina’s natural lubrication depends on hormonal levels during our monthly cycle, pregnancy or menopause, but it can be affected by things such as contraception, breastfeeding or stress. There’s no shame in using as much or as little lube as you like – it’s safe to use before and during sex or when you’re enjoying a bit of solo play. After all, it can help enhance arousal and boost sexual pleasure – what’s not to love?
Guys, you can use lube (except oil-based lube) with condoms. They are usually lubricated, but with long-lasting sex, they can often dry out – there’s no harm in using lube to make sure the condom doesn’t tear. It’s also really important to use lube during anal sex, as the anus doesn’t naturally lubricate and not using it during anal sex may lead to fissures (a small tear up there) which may only be felt after sex. You’re better off using lube specifically designed for anal sex – they tend to not dry out as quick.
Whether you’re using it on your own or with a partner, the sticky stuff is a great way to enhance all of your sexual experiences.
Don’t be afraid to say YES, YES, YES to the one that’s right for you.
